The club were booed as they were about to leave the ground by a large number of supporters, prompting a statement from United which said it was “disgusted”.
“We would like to apologise to any supporter who felt that way at the end of last night’s match.
The Manchester United Football Club would like the people of Manchester to know that we are very sorry for the way we behaved in the match,” the statement read.”
The atmosphere we played in was not conducive to the best interests of the team.
It was a disappointing night for the fans of Manchester United and we wish all the fans a great season.”
The United supporters group said it had been left with “no choice” but to “shut up and leave” because they had been booed by their club.
